Churchill Navigation News
PANgaea Coverage
Pangaea, the online newsletter published by Professional Surveyor magazine, featured a short blurb regarding the presentation Tom gave at the 2011 State of the Map conference held in Denver. As Jeff points out, we use OSM data to compliment the geospatial data we license elsewhere, and it is often invaluable in providing a unique source of data simple unavailable elsewhere -- which can be critical for SAR efforts.Stern Magazine Coverage
After winning the 2011 ARE "Auggie" award for the best Augmented Reality application earlier this year, we were contacted by Stern magazine, which was preparing to cover this exciting field for an upcoming article. We put them in touch with one of our customers, the Pasadena Police Department, which in turn led to this coverage. Not only are we happy to see ARS mentioned in popular media, we are especially pleased to see the PPD recognized for being on the cutting edge of law enforcement. At the end of the day, technology is only useful if it helps further the mission, and ARS delivers, as law enforcement agencies around the world can attest.
Stern is a German publication similar to "Time" magazine in the United States and boasts a readership in the neighborhood of 12 Million people. This particular issue has received a great deal of publicity as well, due to the innovative ways Stern used Augmented Reality throughout the issue.
Newspaper Article on Security & Technology
We are at the Paris Air Show this week, and delighted to see some coverage of own company in France, along with the Boeings and Airbuses of the world. The French newspaper "Le Bien Public" has published an article [Cached Version] in which Churchill Navigation's Augmented Reality System is described.New Scientist magazine coverage
Our mapping product was mentioned in an article on the use of augmented reality in security applications in the Feb. 18th print edition of "New Scientist" magazine:
For police officers tracking targets via helicopter, Churchill Navigation of Boulder, Colorado, is augmenting live helicopter video with terrain-contoured street maps in real time. Without this, says founder Tom Churchill, it is hard for pilots looking at a maze of streets on screen to know which street a target is in. It works by tightly coupling the map database to the software that controls the camera's motion.
TD3-AR News Coverage
We recently participated in the TD3-AR technology trials sponsored by the UK Home Office, the culmination of which was a showcase event held in London at the Honorable Artillery Company. The event received national news coverage, and ARS is featured in this clip aired by ITV news demonstrating how it can be used in counter-terrorism applications.
Additional coverage of the event can be found on the UK Home Office's web site.
KVH Press Release
We've enjoyed working with Novatel and KVH for some time -- the CNS-5000 is a great GPS+Inertial measurement unit that we have used with medium-end gimbals. Their recent press release provides some information on why we use it. Chris Watson also wrote up a nice blog article.
Oct 25, 2010 Update: Their CEO, Martin Kits van Heyningen, also threw a shout out to us in their Third Quarter Earnings Call.

Article: High Tech 'Mission Kits'
The latest issue (Third Quarter, 2010) of Helicopters magazine features an article entitled High-Tech 'Mission Kits' by Mike Minnich that covers much of the equipment in use today by law enforcement agencies in Canada. ARS is mentioned prominently in the mapping section:
“Whether we’re using day-time video or night-time infrared, the map is overlaid and very legible. The TFO can touch a zoomed-in location on the screen, and we’ll immediately get the full street address. We used this feature during an actual incident response just on my last set of shifts, in fact.”
